About
Our client is an ocean data company that collects data for various purposes, ranging from mapping the seabed to monitoring the environment. They employ a unique approach by using a marine robotic system known as an Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) instead of conventional crewed survey ships.
Overview
This full-time role involves responsibility for geophysical data processing, interpretation, and reporting over a 40-hour working week. It provides an opportunity to be at the forefront of the rapidly evolving USV market, with clear career progression. In addition to a competitive salary and the benefits of remote working arrangements, you will receive annual leave entitlement, a salary sacrifice pension scheme, access to private healthcare, and a yearly bonus scheme dependent on both company and personal performance.
Working as a geophysicist allows you to visualize areas of the world not often seen by many people. This role offers the opportunity to work with various datasets and integrate them to tell the story of specific areas of the seabed. An understanding of the practical applications used by clients—such as the implications of chaotic sediment or rock outcrops for offshore pipe or cable installation, or the effects of mobile sediments on offshore wind turbine installation or maintenance—adds excitement to the theoretical aspects of data processing. The role also involves working with data from a large fleet of state-of-the-art USVs equipped with top-spec survey grade equipment, alongside ambitious expansion plans and a continuous improvement mindset for data quality and capabilities development within the processing team.
Responsibilities will include:
- Side scan sonar data processing, including seabed picking, interpretation, production of mosaic, and seabed features
- Shallow SBP (Innomar) processing and interpretation
- Magnetometer data processing
- Report writing and initial quality control of all related geophysical survey data, creating final client deliverables to a high standard
- Production of Seabed Features charts based on SSS, MBES, and backscatter data sets
- Liaising with the online team during remote data acquisition missions, monitoring data being captured using online and offline survey tools
- Liaison with sub-contractors, clients, and the wider project team to ensure the aims of the project are met
On occasion, this role may involve:
- Supporting bathymetry, backscatter, and survey navigation data processing
- Supporting the Geophysical team in developing in-house bespoke software and future R&D developments
- Implementing, maintaining, and updating standard operating procedures and processes appropriate to the role
Requirements: Essential Skills / Attributes and Experience
- Degree in Geoscience or Geophysics
- Knowledge of marine survey data acquisition and processing software (e.g., Beamworx, Qimera, Chesapeake SonarWiz, Moga Seaview, Oasis Montaj, etc.)
- Strong computer literacy with experience in Microsoft 365
Desirable Experience and Qualities
- A Master’s degree in a relevant applied Geoscience
- Knowledge of programming (e.g., Python) as we continuously develop our in-house bespoke processing software
